Acologix Adds Business Development Leader to its Board of Directors

Emeryville, CA-March 22, 2004 — Acologix, Inc., a privately held biopharmaceutical company, announced the addition of a key business development leader to its team today. Tom Smart, Vice President of Business Development at XOMA Ltd., has joined Acologix's Board of Directors. "We are very fortunate to be able to draw upon Mr. Smart’s knowledge of broad business aspects of building a successful company.” said Mr. Yoshi Kumagai, President and CEO of Acologix. “Mr. Smart’s experience will provide key input to our success in moving towards a drug development company.”

Tom Smart currently serves as Vice President of Business Development at XOMA Ltd., and is responsible for leading its licensing and collaboration initiatives. Prior to joining XOMA Ltd., Mr. Smart served on GenVec, Inc.’s senior management team, most recently as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development, and was responsible for directing the company's business development, intellectual property and contracting functions. Prior to his tenure at GenVec, he held various business development and strategic planning positions with several biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, including G.D. Searle (now Pfizer), Cell Genesys, Inc., and Genetics Institute, Inc.

Mr. Smart received a Bachelor of Science in the biological sciences from Cornell University and a Master of Business Administration in finance and marketing from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.
