Acologix Presents In Vivo Results on AC-100 at the
American Society for Bone and Mineral Research Annual Meeting
Emeryville, CA-October 4, 2004 Acologix, Inc., a
privately held biopharmaceutical company, today presented data from
in vivo preclinical studies of its lead compound, AC-100, during
the 26th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral
Research, being held in Seattle, Washington, USA. The presentation
entitled AC-100, a Fragment of MEPE, Promotes Fracture Healing
in a Femoral Closed Fracture Model in Rats, abstract # 1775,
was presented by Mirella Lazarov, DDS, Ph.D., Acologix Senior Scientist,
Preclinical Development. The data suggest that AC-100 promotes fracture
healing in an experimental model and may have potential as an anabolic
drug to increase bone mass.
AC-100, a synthetic peptide, is being developed for indications
related to bone and dentin regeneration. In several in vitro and
in vivo preclinical models, AC-100 has demonstrated potent and selective
bone formation activities that were superior, or similar, to other
known skeletal growth and differentiation factors.
The clinical development for AC-100 is targeted initially
for local bone and dentin regeneration with other possible applications
for acute treatment of osteoporosis, said Mr. Yoshi Kumagai,
Acologix President and Chief Executive Officer.
A Phase I clinical study in healthy volunteers, completed in 2003,
demonstrated a very favorable safety profile and that the drug was
well tolerated.
Most of the current therapeutics on the market or those under development
for osteoporosis are preventive drugs which simply delay advancement
of bone loss. No molecule that can regenerate dentin tissues is
known to date. In the U.S. today, it is estimated that 10 million
individuals have osteoporosis and almost 34 million are estimated
to have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis.
